We are currently in position 33 12N 015 31W sailing under full main and single-furled yankee. We're doing about 5.5 knots in a 8G14 NE wind and a 0.75m sea. It's partly cloudy and the air temperature is 20C. Our fourth 24 hour run was 139nm. We currently have 40nm to go - like a sail from Fremantle to Mandurah!
SailingGen in action
Yesterday afternoon we encountered a brand new Oyster yacht on passage from Ipswich to the Canaries. We chatted with them briefly on VHF, learning that they'll be crossing to Antigua to join the Oyster Round the World rally.
Overnight we had to call two motor vessels whose bearing wasn't changing as they approached. One answered and agreed to change course, the other didn't answer but did change course. The second had no AIS until after we called her so I had to use the 'Big Ship this is Little Yacht' routine.
From midnight the wind moderated from 15G20 to 10G15. Just before dawn we shook out the first reef which helped keep us moving nicely. The wind is coming and going, requiring us to 'head up in the lulls and down in the puffs' to maintain speed and to avoid being dragged north of the rhumb line.
The SailingGen has been working well. Its default configuration needs optimising to suit Zen Again but it produced over 60Ah which avoided having to run the engine this morning.
We anticipate arriving in Porto Santo this evening, hopefully before moon-set at around 2200. The approach to the harbour looks simple and the cruising guides confirm so. We expect to use the anchorage outside the harbour for the night.
Trust all's well where you are!
