New York

Hi everyone,

We visited New York City twice by train from Port Washington.  It's a 20 minute walk from the Town Jetty to the station, with a very nice bakery opposite and an equally nice diner one block beyond.

Grand Central Station

The train trip takes 40 minutes with hourly services to both Grand Central and Penn Street Stations.  The trains are long so walk to the front at both ends before boarding.

Long Island Railroad Train

We only went to/from Grand Central Station.  I was last there in the 1980s and it's still very impressive.

On Day 1 we walked to the Empire State building and checked-out the wonderful art deco lobby.  From there we walked to Broadway and Times Square where we had lunch at a diner.  From there we walked to 1 Vanderbilt where we did the tourist thing.

Day 1 was concluded at the Campbell Bar at Grand Central Station.  Expensive but a haven of tranquillity amongst the hustle and bustle of NYC.

On Day 2 we headed south down Manhattan Island.  We walked about half way which got us out of the touristy centre and into the 'burbs'.  We took the subway the rest of the way.  We sampled the famous NYC street food for lunch.  Then we walked onward to Seaport which has nice views of the harbour and several old ships to explore (we didn't).  From there we walked up Wall Street to the NYSE and to a very nice tavern.

The tavern had a great vibe and a live Jazz band playing.  Another very nice interlude.  Then it was onto the subway back to Grand Central.  It was great to experience NYC.

In addition to visiting NYC we explored Port Washington for two days.  It's a nice town.  Free rides to/from the US$35/day mooring, or anchor and the dinghy dock is free.  Laundry, supermarkets and West Marine store in walking distance.  Great diner and bakery in the centre of town.

On departure from Port Washington we rewatered and refueled Zen Again.  There appeared to be 0.25m more water than charted at the Capri Marina fuel dock.

Trust all's well where you are!
