Seal Bay to Devil Island

Hi everyone,

Yesterday we motored for 12nm to reach another anchorage with good protection from N through W to the SE.  A front is approaching so we wanted somewhere well protected and within striking distance of Mt Desert Island.  A suitable anchorage lies between Devil Island and Bold Island.  It contains a rocky islet known as Hell's Half Acre.  Like Wizard Pool in Scotland, the names make it a must-see!

We departed Seal Bay at 1130.  The thick fog we awoke to had burned off.  As we emerged from the Bay we could see thick fog still blanketed the 4nm wide channel to Deer Island.  Again the radar was useful with visibility less than 100m at times.

In the Fog

Once across the channel we zigzagged eastward through the islands.  One of the islands is called St Helena which was fun.  We went in and out of fog banks with spectacular views all around.  As we approached and passed Stonington the lobster pots were much denser.  The town is a major centre for the Maine lobster industry.

Arrival and anchoring at Devil Island at 1400 was uneventful.  There were a string of lobster pots through the anchorage which wasn't helpful.  We found a gap, anchored in 6m and the anchor set well.  The Navionics SonarCharts appeared more accurate than the official charts.

We expect to spend a few days here until the front passes.  Looking forward to exploring.

Trust all's well where you are!
