We are currently in position 12 46N 063 27W. We are sailing under double-reefed main and single-furled yankee at 6 knots on a course of 280T. Our CoG is 300T due to a 1 knot NW current. The wind is SE 12G16. Our first 24 hour run was 112nm by the log (not including current).
Dawn Today
We departed Woburn Bay yesterday at 1400. There was a light SE wind but the seas outside the bay were confused so we motorsailed to the SW cape of Grenada. There the wind and seas improved and we could kill the donk. We sailed past quite a few local fishing boats.
Yesterday evening was very slow. We were well reefed down due to nearby lightning storms but had very little wind. For several hours we were doing 2 knots in less than 5 knots of wind. Eventually the storms moved past and we could gybe onto a better sailing angle, and the wind picked up to about 10 knots. The wind was NE for a while but then gradually veered SE.
The lightning continued to light up the areas to our N and W until about 0300. Quite spectacular under 8/8ths mid-level cloud. In the pre-dawn hours the clouds started to clear away and we could see a few stars. A few cargo vessels passed in the night. Only one needed calling and he kindly agreed to pass behind us.
Today we've had steadily improving wind from the SE. A couple of light rainstorms came past but we've avoided them so far.
This post brought to you by Starlink! Impressed that it's working out here. Interestingly dishy is facing SW which suggests it's using the ground station in Colombia. Might even be able to share it on Facebook which would be a first.
Trust all's well where you are.
