Hi everyone,
We departed Curacao yesterday at 1600 local towards Santa Marta, Colombia. We spent all morning clearing out in Willemstad in pouring rain. By the time we got back to the boats (us, Cerulean and Serafino) we were ready to wait until this morning. But an hour later the weather cleared somewhat and we decided to proceed.
At 1600 today we were at 12 55N 070 30W steering 300M and sailng under double-furled yankee only at 5.5 knots. There is 7/8 cloud cover with occasional drizzle. The wind is 15G20 from the E.
We had a good departure from Spanish Waters and set sail with a double-reefed main and yankee. Cerulean and Serafino followed us out. In the evening there was a lot of lightning over the mainland coast. For a few hours the skies cleared enough for us to enjoy the half moon, planets and stars.
By the small hours an area of rain caught up with us and we had 2 hours of solid rain. A bit of thunder but no lightning nearby. We both got soaked again. But we were making good progress and the seas were only up to 2m. The wind was 10G15 for much of the night.
This morning we ran a SSB sked with Cerulean and also boats in Panama and the ABCs. Spoke with five other boats.
Today the rain has cleared away and we're hoping a bit of blue we can see to windward clears the skies for us. The wind has gradually increased and we expect it to increase further. Hence handing the main and sailing under headsail alone. This also lets us sail 'deeper' to reduce our miles to sail.
