Shelter Cove

Hi everyone,

We stayed at Shelter Cove for five nights.  Initially the weather was wet and/or foggy but we had two days with bright sunshine.  We arrived to find OCC sv Bonny already at anchor.  By coincidence Bonny's home port is Hoo Hess Yacht Club on the Medway River in Kent where I sailed with my uncle in the 1980s.

During the foggy days we explored by dinghy but didn't go ashore.  We were followed around by a seal, saw a bald eagle, watched an osprey take a big fish, and viewed lots of kelp, rock and trees.  We met with Tom aboard Bonny and Zen Again.

When the sun came out we dinghied ashore with Tom.  There's a network of trails around the island, and an array of beaches where they can be accessed.  Some of the beaches have fire pits, benches and even composting earth closets.  Apparently there are black bears and mink in the area but sadly we didn't spot any.

During our last two days in the cove OCC sv Begonia and sv Kelper arrived, and sv Moir.  We all met on one of the beaches for a sundowner.  Got a fire going and toasted marshmallows.  Always fun chatting with OCC cruisers.

Shelter Cove was a great stopover.  Lots to see and do.  An excellent anchorage.

Trust all's well where you are.

  1. I can see why it is called Shelter Cove. Hardly a ripple on the water. So beautiful and different from tropical islands
