Lunenburg

Hi everyone,

We spent three nights in Lunenburg.  The weather was poor on day 1 but cleared up for the rest of our stay.  Lunenburg is a lovely old town with rich nautical history.  It was and is the home of the iconic Bluenose I & II fishing schooners and Canadian endeavours in the International Fisherman's Cup.  The cup was initiated after America's Cup races were called off 'due to high winds'.  US and Canadian fishermen decided to create a 'race for real sailors'.

Bluenose II heading out

Bluenose II is based in Lunenburg.  While at home it goes out on the bay twice daily.  She looks spectacular under sail.  She sails around Nova Scotia and beyond during the season.  Bluenose is on the Canadian 10c coin.

We spent most of day 1 rewatering and reprovisioning.  We filled our jerries at Zwickers' free dinghy dock.  For provisioning we dinghied to the free dinghy dock at the west end of the harbour and walked to the Farmer's Market and Francis' Supermarket.

We met the sv Kelper crew for lunch at The Knot.  Nice pub with good food but the beer list was a little disappointing.

We strolled around the town despite the poor weather.  Lots of pretty buildings.  The building colours reminded us of Tobermory.

Day 2 dawned with a clear sky.  We spent much of the day at the Fisheries Museum.  Much of the top floor is devoted to Bluenose and is very interesting.  The rest of the museum is interesting too, but hey, we're sailors!  The exhibits include the last working Lunenburg fishing schooner still afloat.

After a full morning in the museum we needed refreshing.  We met up with the sv Kelpers for coffee and cake at The Cake Lady, followed by a take-away lunch from the Lamprai & Spice Cafe.  After hitting the museum again we slated our thirst at the Shipwright Brewing Company - highly recommended!

Back aboard Zen Again we watched Bluenose II passing to and fro and enjoyed the warm weather.  It's remarkable how warm inshore waters become here in good weather.

On day 3 we went ashore for a longer walk.  We walked out of town to a trail north of town,.  The trail looped back to town where we visited a chandlery and the Foodland supermarket.  Foodland is smaller than Francis'.  Then it was back to Zen Again to prepare for an afternoon departure.
