Apia Inbound Day 1

Hi everyone,

At noon today we were at 15 15S 163 10W steering 240M, sailing under double-reefed main and single-furled yankee at 5 knots.  The wind was 13G17 from the ESE.  Our noon  to noon distances were 128nm by the log and 122nm over the ground.   Overall we'd logged 856nm and 836nm respectively.  Our distance to go was 504nm.  We've swapped over to 'inbound' subject lines and we're headed towards Apia in Samoa.

Rainstorm evaporating

Yesterday afternoon clouds gradually built up with scattered rainstorms amongst them.  Mid-afternoon we toasted King Neptune to thank him for the good weather we've had and to ask for more of the same.  Seems he doesn't like port.  By sunset we were altering course to weave between the rainstorms.

It was interesting watching the small rain storms.  We could see them form, rain pour from them, and then the rain stopped and most of the cloud evaporated away.

Late in the evening, when we couldn't see them coming, we got a little rain and a bit more wind.  The sky was overcast and even with the 3/4 moon the rain storms were hard to see.  Then from 0400 to 0600 we had rain and wind gusting to 28 knots from an extensive rain storm.  For such minor squalls we only need to furl the yankee a little more since we always have the main's second reef in when squalls are possible.

Rainy dawn

Some of the other boats sailing with us haven't experienced major squalls, say 40 knots+.  On WhatsApp they describe their night in very different terms to us!

Trust all's well where you are.
